Travel Photography Competition – week 76

Marianne Knight - St Paul's Cathedral, London, UK

Hello everyone and welcome to the 76th edition of our popular weekly Travel Photography Competition! This week will be looking at the photos sent into our Facebook page between 17th and 24th January.

Recently we’ve been a bit busy planning and promoting our forthcoming 11-month hitchhiking tip across Asia, but in all the havoc of preparation we couldn’t have forgotten about our Competition :)

The first winning photo was taken during a hike to Upper Yosemite Falls in Yosemite National Park, California, USA. Yosemite Falls (739 m) is the highest waterfall in North America. The top of Upper Yosemite Fall may be reached via a steep 5.6 km hike beginning near Camp 4. Jordan and Kaya who took this photo during their hike, said: “As the sun set the half moon illuminated the landscape and the lights in the valley below gave a magical feeling hard to describe. We felt as if we were walking in a dream. On the left you see Upper Yosemite Falls with Venus rising, in the background you see Half Dome, and below is Yosemite Valley.”

This great shot was taken by WiredNomads. They have disclosed that it took 300 photos to compose this wonderful image! Jordan and Kaya are an interesting couple of travellers and we highly recommend checking out their website, not only if you are into photography but first and foremost if you love adventure blogs.

The second winner in this week’s competition shows St Paul’s Cathedral which is the seat of the Bishop of London and one of the most famous landmarks of the British capital city. The present day church, dating back to the late 17th century, sits atop Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London. One of the most interesting features is its Whispering Gallery. Due to the unique acoustic features of the temple, it allows you to hear a whisper uttered at the other end of the gallery.

And in third position we have this week this atmospheric image taken at Ria de Aveiro, Ovar, Portugal. It’s a lagoon located on the Atlantic coast, south of the municipality of Espinho. This 45-kilometer-long lagoon is one of Europe’s last remaining untouched coastal marshland and is home to many species of birds.
