Travel Photography Competition – week 73
Hello again and welcome to the next instalment of our popular weekly Travel Photography Competition! This week will be looking at the photos sent into our Facebook page between the 24th – 31st December.
Our winner this week comes all the way from Uplistsikhe Cave Town, Georgia a cave city located on the Georgian part of the silk road. Constructed on the high rocky left bank of the Mtkvari River, it contains structures dating back from the Early Iron Age to the Late Middle Ages, and is notable for the co-existence of pagan and Christian architecture. Since 2007 the historic site has been on the tentative list for inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage List. For more information about Georgia, check out our Georgia travel guide.
In second place this week we have a scene from Donaukanal in Vienna, Austria. Donaukanal or “Dunube Canal” is a former arm of the River Danabe and borders Vienna’s city centre, Innere Stadt. In the early 90s the area saw a period of great redevelopment where recreational areas were created along the banks in the southern sections. Today the paths are regularly used by joggers, cyclists and skaters.
And our last photo this week also comes from the beautiful little nation of Georgia and depicts down-town Tbilisi at night. Tbilisi is a city dear to our hearts here at Hitch-Hikers Handbook and is a wonderful blend of contrasting architectural styles as medieval, classical and Soviet structures jostle for position in this strangely alluring place. Check out more photos of Tbilisi’s unique architecture.
This great photo was submitted by Johnny English from Mitchelstown, Ireland.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this week’s edition of the competition, either by sending or by voting for the pictures! We wish you a nice beginning of the week!
