Travel Photography Competition – week 72

Neal Wilson - Machu Piccho, Peru

Hello everyone and welcome to the 71st edition of our popular Travel Photography Competition! This week we will be looking at photos sent into our Facebook page between 17th and 23rd December.

In first position this week we’ve got this wonderfully atmospheric photo, showing the iconic fog of England. This shot was taken in Valley Gardens in Harrogate, a charming Victorian spa and floral town, located in North Yorkshire, England, UK. The Valley Gardens, in Low Harrogate, is the town’s main park, tourist attraction and an English Heritage Grade II Listed Garden. It also includes beautiful historical buildings such as the Sun Pavilion and Colonnades.

The second photo in this week’s competition was taken by Lake Tahoe, California, USA. It’s a large freshwater lake located on the border between the states of California and Nevada, in the Sierra Nevada mountain range at an elevation of 6,225 ft (1,897 m). Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America and the second-deepest in the US (after Crater Lake in Oregon). It was formed about 2 million years ago. It is well-known for its stunning mountain surroundings and the clarity of its waters.

In third position we’ve got two pictures this week. The first one of them shows the famous Machu Picchu in the Cusco Region, Peru. It’s probably the most emblematic site of Inca civilization and it’s often referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas”. The Incas built it at the end of the 15th century, but abandoned it 100 years later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. It is  one of Peru’s most important tourist attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

And the last picture in this week’s competition, with an equal number of votes as the one above, was taken in Ars-en-Ré on Ile de Ré island, France. The island is a popular tourist destination with approximately the same amount of hours of sunshine as the famous southern coast of France. The most important tourist attraction on the island is the old city of Saint-Martin whose citadel walls were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with 11 others Fortifications of Vauban across France.
