The demonic faces on Prasat Bayo - Angkor, Siem Reap, Cambodia (14)

Angkor Wat

The temple complex of Angkor is one of the wonders of the ancient world and a must for all visitors to Cambodia and Southeast Asia generally. Built over a 300 year period between 900 – 1200 A.D, the various temples and ruins number over a thousand and include some definitive examples of the Khmer and Dravidian building styles.

The jewel in the crown is the indomitably breathtaking Angkor Wat, built by King Suryavarman II (1112 – 52). It is the largest temple at Angkor and the only building to have remained a significant religious centre since it was built. Other highlights include the magnificent Angkor Thom, the otherworldly faces of Bayon and the picture book qualities of Ta Prohm.

To visit the temples of Angkor you will need to use the town of Siem Reap as your base. The actual city itself is quite tourist heavy but there is a favourable selection of well priced guest houses and hostels as well as numerous bars and restaurants to relax after a hard days sightseeing.

The complex of Angkor is huge, so bear this in mind when planning your trip. One day is unlikely to be enough (unless you start at the crack of dawn) and we would definitely recommend hiring bicycles as a good way to cover the distances involved. This can be done at various points in Siem Reap or outside the temples themselves. Entry into the temple complex is quite steep at 20 dollars per day, but it is definitely worth the expense.

  • Ten ogromny zabytek wzbudza podziw i szacunek. Jak bogata musiała być cywilizacja, która go stworzyła. Zdolni architekci i budowniczowie. Jest co oglądać!
